Newtown Cultural Arts Commission Chairperson Jennifer Johnston
remarked, “When work on The Flagpole Radio Café
began a year ago, we strived to create a compelling variety show in the
style of a radio broadcast that would prominently feature artists from
Newtown and the surrounding areas and also spread the word about cultural
events that take place all year long within our community. To celebrate
the end of the first season and because of the enthusiastic response of
our audience, we are moving from the Alexandria Room to the Edmond
Town Hall Theatre. I’m particularly
delighted to have Daria Musk return
to conclude the season with her mother Wendy
Musk who plays flute with virtuosity and grace. We are looking forward to
the May show as well as presenting a whole new season of The Flagpole Radio Café programs
resuming in September.”
For those not acquainted with
The Flagpole Radio Café, it is an engaging variety show created by
Jim Allyn, Martin Blanco and Barbara Gaines in conjunction with the
Newtown Cultural Arts Commission. It features music by
Jim Allyn and the Flagpole Radio Café Orchestra, a dynamic ensemble created for
the show, and radio style comedy sketches by the hyperbolically named Flagpole Shakespeare Repertory Theatre.
The Flagpole Radio Cafe is hosted by musician and radio personality
Chris Teskey, who also broadcasts the show on his celebrated program on WPKN radio.
Each show features a musical guest artist such as Peter Yarrow,
Vanesse Thomas, Phil Bowler
and Yale’s internationally acclaimed male choir The Whiffenpoofs.
